“”Some research suggests that doing such things as exercising regularly, eating right, and staying intellectually active can contribute to cognitive vitality,” says American Geriatrics Society (AGS) member Stephanie Studenski, MD, professor of medicine in the division of geriatrics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Studenski was also one of the organizers of a recent AGS conference on cognitive vitality.”

Conscientious Achievers Less Prone to Alzheimer’s Disease ?

Filed under: Health, Aging, Family, Brain games, Alzheimers — Pam at 1:37 pm on Wednesday, March 19, 2008

According to Carla K. Johnson “A surprising study of elderly people suggests that those who see themselves as self-disciplined, organized achievers have a lower risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease than people who are less conscientious.”

“A purposeful personality may somehow protect the brain, perhaps by increasing neural connections that can act as a reserve against mental decline, said study co-author Robert Wilson of Chicago’s Rush University Medical Center.”

“This adds to our knowledge that lifestyle, personality, how we think, feel and behave are very importantly tied up with risk for this terrible illness,” Wilson said. “It may suggest new ideas for trying to delay the onset of this illness.”

As we Baby Boomers turn 62 this year, we are told today that Alzheimer’s is predicted to affect 1 in 8 of us in coming years.

Memory isn’t the only thing that fades with Alzheimers. Some memory loss is normal with aging. But the ability to plan, organize and to think creatively also fade. Have concerns? Try testing your abilities in those areas.

Games like mahjong, chess, freecell and spider solitaire will help us exercise the planning and organizing abilities. I’ll be on the lookout for games that stimulate creativity. Please let me know if you have any you can recommend.

Challenging Jigsaws

Filed under: Aging, Family, Brain games, Alzheimers — Pam at 3:14 pm on Sunday, February 3, 2008

I love doing jigsaws online and find that being given all the pieces but with NO picture to follow, gives me the greatest satisfaction when I solve one of these challenging puzzles.

Cal used to put them up for free, but since his death there is a small donation asked for in order to keep the site going. With over 50 “mystery” jigsaws available, as well as many “very hard” ones, the cost is very tiny for hours of mental stimulation. And of course, all the “daily” jigsaws are FREE.

“Someone may have a little bit better day or
even a little happier life merely because we took
the time to share what we had to give.” Cal.
